We're Movin' On Up!
It can hardly be believed, however, come July 2002 Flipper Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church will mark it's 75th Anniversary. To make certain this auspicious milestone is commemorated properly, a series of planning sessions have been, and will be underway to set the course of the direction our much-touted "Diamond Jubilee" year will be celebrated. Thus far an emphasis has been placed on increasing Flipper's presence in the surrounding area. Throughout the year the weekend of the 4th Sunday of each month will be earmarked for a series of community outreach initiatives. Fridays will be devoted to "Open House" night during which a home-cooked meal will be provided and various donated items will be distributed to area residents. Saturdays it is hoped Flipperites might volunteer their time to assist in various community-based outreach projects, while during Sunday morning worship services a "Flipper History" moment will be interjected. Among the other projects also being discussed include the construction and entrance of a commemorative Jubilee Float in FAMU's 2001 Homecoming Parade; a host of special events geared to raising much-needed funds; and the production of a Jubilee video documenting Flipper's rich history and memorializing the many Flipperites, past and present, without whose sacrifice and dedication this milestone would not be possible. Also, a special fund dubbed the "Jubilee Trust" will be established with the gaol of raising 20,000 by year's end. Members, friends, and family are asked to contribute on various levels of commitment. Inivitaions will also be extended to past members of Flipper to participate during the Jubilee Day 2002 Weekend for a long-overdue "Flipper Family Reunion". All Flipperites are encouraged to join in on the year-long festivities by participating on at least one of many committees being formulated to help insure the Diamond Jubilee will be a huge sucesss. Sign-up sheets detailing the responscibilties of each committee have been posted in the foyer. The next planning meeting is scheduled for Aug 9 at 7pm. All interested are welcome so clear your schedule and lend a hand. Flipper Chapel is indeed..."Moving on up!"

It's That Time Again
It hardly seems like a year has gone by, but alas...it has and we all know what that means! On Aug 19-24, the Florida Annual Conference, the oldest conference in the 11th Episcopal District, will convene at Tallahassee's Bethel AME--the "Mother Church" of Tallahassee District. This year the event will be hosted by New Bethel AME Church (Rev. F. Josephus Johnson, pastor) of the Quincy District. Flipper's presence at the annual conference will be represented by Sis. Chenell Lee (left) and Pastor Bell will be addressing the Conference on the evening of Tuesday, August 21. . Flipperites interested in participating in the Conference Choir should contact Bro. Jerome Fitz for rehearsal times. The Mass Choir is scheduled to perform on Thursday, Aug 23 during the Lay Night services. See Pastor Bell, the Florida Conference Secretary, for more details.

In Honor of Her Spirit
On Sunday, August 12 the Board of Christian Education will kick-off its newly established collegiate scholarship program by honoring the memory of Dr. Charlene W. Armstrong--late daughter of beloved Flipperites Dr. C. Wesley and Mrs. Ruth B. Armstrong. Earlier this year the BOCE formulated two scholarships--the Dr. Charlene W. Armstrong Memorial Scholarship and the Dr. C. E. Walker Scholarship for Acedemic Excellence--earmarked, respectively, to provide much-needed funds to one deserving female and one equally deserving male graduating high school, FAMU-bound senior among Flipper's congregation. By setting aside the 2nd Sunday in August (timed to coincide with Dr. Charlene Armstrong's birthday) the BOCE hopes to encourage Flipperites to begin channelling moneys to the scholarship program by notating your intent on the donation envelopes provided to congregrants during Sunday morning services. Likewise, the 2nd Sunday in December has been set aside in honor of Dr. C. E. Walker--a well-noted local educator, community leader and long-standing member of Flipper Chapel.
