A. J. Richardson: A Bishop in High Demand
This month Praise is please to once again profile the Right Reverend A. J. Richardson, presiding bishop of the 19th Episcopal District (Southeastern Africa) of the AME Church. Bishop Richardson has graciously agreed to deliver the keynote address during Flipper's Fellowship Day 2001 Worship Service on Sunday, May 20 at 11am. This will be the Bishop's second consecutive Fellowship Day appearance. Adam J. Richardson, Jr. is a native of Tampa, FL and a graduate of Middleton High School. He earned a B.A. degree in Philosophy and Religion at FAMU and a Master of Divinity from Turner Theological Seminary and a doctor of Sacred Theology via the Atlanta Theological Association and Emory University. The former pastor of Tallahassee's historic Bethel AME Church from 1979-1996, as a speaker and preacher the Bishop is in high demand. He has spoken at numerous locales and events such as Wilberforce University (Ohio), FAMU and FSU here in Tallahassee, Religious Emphasis at Morris Brown College (Atlanta), Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, and a host of other occasions and places both here in the US and abroad. He is a committed community leader who has long been active in several civic organizations like the Southern Christian Leadership Council (SCLC), the Urban League and the National Democratic Convention, Atlanta. His leadership accolades include, among many, the Tallahassee Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance (TIMA) and charter member, former board member and chair of Florida HRS's One Church, One Child. He is also a FAMU Distinguished Alumni (1991) Honoree and the author of several publicized works such as The Pastor's Manual with Dr. George L. Champion, Take Me To The Water: A Manual For Christian Baptism, and Headlines to Homilies: Sermons on Political, Commercial and Other Popular Annoyances".
Elected to the Episcopal Council during the 53rd Quadrennial Session of the AME Church in 1996, Bishop Richardson was previously presiding prelate of the 14th Episcopal District (West Africa). Married to the former Connie Speights of Marianna, FL the Bishop has two children--a daughter, Monique, and a son, Adam J. ("Trey") Richardson III. When not attending to their see, Bishop and Mrs. Richardson maintain residency in the Tallahassee area.
