In The Pulpit
Bishop Richard Allen 1760-1831 (Click for more info.) This month, in celebration of Black History Month, In The Pulpit honors Bishop Richard Allen, founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church--the world's first organized Black church. In 1787 Bishop Allen and others, recognizing the need for an independent Methodist church within the Negro community of Philadelphia, purchased property on which, eventually, historic Bethel AME--known popularly today as the "Mother Church" of the AME Connectional family--was elected. From these humble begginings sprang one of the largest and best-run religious denominations in the country. Pulpit guests at Flipper this month will include Bro. Melvin Herring and Tallahassee Police Chief Walter McNeil as well as our very own pastor, Rev. Melvin Bell. |

From Whence We Came
February is here! We all know what that means. Time for we as a people to 'slow our roll", pause for a moment, look back and reflect on the rich history of the Pan-African race. See, African American history is just a microcosm of what we as Africans have actually experienced throughout time eternal. Indeed, life did not begin at the Great Diaspora! Thus, while we all are being bombarded with the usual historical recollections of the civil rights and Harlem Renaissance movements, or being regaled by dramatic remembrances of the lives of such great African Americans as Maya, Martin, Rosa, Langston, W.E.B., Frederick, Sojourner, Harriet, Crispus, and, yes, Richard himself; do not forget that we are a people of royal descent as well. Let's not overlook the great deeds of Mansa Musa and Sundiata Keita, nor forget the ambitious building projects of Queen Hatshepsut. Remember, when next you see a 're-inaction' of some great event or personage of Ancient Egypt times on the HistoryChannel, know that the original persons being portrayed were not THAT unlike you or I, despite the casting. Be proud, for we are truly a wondrous people capable of magnificent things! That said, in addition to the latest happenings and events at Flipper and in keeping with the season, this month we at Praise venture to bring you some historical tidbits relative to our humble church and the AME church as a whole. We certainly hope that you enjoy our ongoing efforts to further enlighten, inspire, and entertain our readers. As always, thank you for your continued fellowship and support and, of course, if you live in or plan to visit our beautiful city of Tallahassee, don't forget to stop by and help us sing His praises for--at the "Little Church in the Bond Community Where Everybody is Somebody Special"--you are always most certainly welcome
