Member Profile: Dr. C. Wesley Armstrong
Our member in the spotlight for April, 2001 is Dr. Charles Wesley Armstrong. A native of Liberia, the historic West African nation settled by free Negro colonist from the U.S., he was born at Robertsport in Grand Cape Mount County on January 3, 1930. Educated in Liberia and reared in the United Methodist Church, Dr. Armstrong obtained his B.S. in secondary education at the University of Liberia (1957) and his M.L.S. from the School of Library Science at Syracuse University in New York (1967). He received an Advanced Certificate (1967) and his Ph. D.(1971) in Library and Information Sciences from the University of Pittsburgh (PA). Dr. Armstrong began his professional career as an assistant librarian at the University of Liberia in Monrovia in 1958 and, after holding several titles within the department, became Director of Libraries at that institution; a post he held from 1972 to 1984. He was also the founder, professor, and director of the Institute of Librarianship; responsible for the training of non-professional librarians for several West African nations. During this same period, (1956-1990) Dr. Armstrong served as an instructor/professor at several Liberian institutions of learning. In 1990, due to turmoil after the outbreak the Liberian Civil War, the University of Liberia ceased to operate. After barely fleeing his homeland with his life and health intact, Dr. Armstrong settled in Tallahassee with his family. He is married to the former Ruth Bradley and is the father of four daughters, Evangeline, Elizabeth (Meata), Lucille, and the late Dr. Charlene W. Armstrong. A dedicated member of Flipper since his forced retirement, he serves on the Board of Christian Education, the Church School Board, attends Bible Study regularly and often lectures to our youth during Children's Hour. Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Armstrong has held many notable posts, served on many boards, published numerous books and articles, received several accolades and honors, and was highly active in the United Methodist Church of Liberia. We truly thank God for his deliverance and continued good health. | |
